Division
Profile
The
Inner Eastern Melbourne Division of General Practice (IEMDGP) was established in
September 1993, and is federally funded by the Department of Health and Ageing.
IEMDGP forms the network
for GPs living and working in the Boroondara area.
The Division’s catchment is the City of Boroondara, plus small areas of
the Cities of Manningham and Whitehorse. Overall,
the Division covers 16 postcodes. It
is bound by Templestowe Road and the Yarra River to the north, the South Eastern
Arterial and Gardiner's Creek to the south, and Warrigal Road, Burwood Highway,
Elgar, Williamsons and Manningham Roads, and High Street to the east.
The Division office is located at Level 1, 123 Whitehorse Road, Balwyn,
which is geographically the centre of the area.
The
population of Boroondara is 194,988 with 6% more females than males. Boroondara has the highest proportion of aged people in Victorian.
There is a lower proportion of children (pre-school/school age) and young
adults (25-39 years), but a higher proportion of late secondary/university-aged
children (15-24 years). 70.7% of the
population is Australian born. Asians
make up the majority of the overseas born population.
The
socio-economic status of the Division is of a high standard. On average, the population of Boroondara receives higher incomes and is
among the most highly educated and qualified in Victoria.
There
are over 300 GPs in the Division, of which almost 200 are practicing within the
Division boundaries. A proportion of
the total number of GPs operate outside the Division, but reside in Boroondara.
The ratio of GPs to residents is one GP for every 1,048 people. Camberwell and Hawthorn have a significantly higher ratio of GPs to
residents.
