What is a Learning Plan & Portfolio?

A learning plan is a means by which GP's decide upon and document their learning needs in respect to their professional work in general practice. It may include, but is not confined to clinical skills, practice management, research skills and or/ teaching skills. In a Learning Plan, GPs document:

What they need to learn
Why they need to learn it
How they are going to learn it
Evidence that they have achieved their goal, and
the time frame

What are the benefits of a Learning Plan?

The use of a Learning Plan is based on Adult Learning Principles. A Learning Plan aims to:

Place you at the centre of the learning process, and uses your current practice as the basis of learning.
Assist you to make informed choices about your education needs
Assist you to integrate theory and practice into your work
Enhance your motivation to learn and to ask appropriate questions of yourself and others
Encourage you to regularly review your Learning Needs
Encourage you to share your learning experience with peers

All you need to do is complete and forward a copy of Form 1 (learning plan) to your state QA&CPD unit. You may also choose to submit the completed tools 1-4 with your learning plan, if you wish your state RACGP Professional Development Officer (PDO) to assist you with your plan.

On completion of your learning plan, please complete and forward a copy of Form 2 (final evaluation) to your state QA&CPD unit. 30 Category 1 CPD points will be allocated on receipt of your form.

There needs to be at least 12 months between submitting form 1 and form 2 (to have the time for you to do the activities you require). So the deadline for submitting form 1 will be December 2006, in order to leave at least 12 months to complete the plan.  The plan can be longer than 12 months providing it fits in to this triennium (Jan. 2005 - Dec. 2007)

Triennium Requirements

GPs are required to undertake at least 2 different activities from Category 1 during the 2005-2007 triennium, so completing the Learning Plan is an excellent method of obtaining 30 Category 1 points!
